We celebrate success at BETT 2010

We had another successful year at BETT, which took place from 13-16 January 2010, at Olympia London. BETT provides one of the best opportunities to showcase our products, and we feel that experiencing uLearn first hand and seeing its rich library of maps, photographs and resources is the perfect way to learn how invaluable it is.

This year, our stand had more PCs than ever before which enabled us to demonstrate our products to many more visitors. This was especially useful considering at the time of writing, BETT 2010 was on its way to exceeding last year's record figure of 30,000 visitors!

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to visit our stand and we hope you found our products useful!

Northern Ireland gets on the map

uLearn is proud to announce a new service, NI Maps, for schools throughout Northern Ireland. Record numbers of schools have been opting into the service!

NI Maps will include both an Irish language interface and the ability to log-in seamlessly to the mapping service from the Learning NI Portal, using Shibboleth.

This service will be constantly evolving so make sure you check back regularly to see the latest developments.

OS Digital Map Data pilot is extended

The pilot project providing Ordnance Survey mapping for the whole of the UK has now been extended beyond its previous end date of August 2009. The pilot will now continue until JISC is able to put a permanent arrangement in place.

uLearn provides detailed OS mapping to schools and Local Authorities so the extension of this important project is welcome news! We are pleased that we can continue to bring you comprehensive mapping functionalities and geography resources. This will allows schools to add national OS data to their uLearn license on an ongoing basis.

Advice on the revised KS3 geography curriculum

A new framework for teaching and learning recently came into place for all National Curriculum Foundation subjects; one that provides "greater flexibility for schools to tailor teaching and learning." (QCA, 2008). The revised KS3 geography programme of study identifies the ways in which Geographical Information Systems (GIS) should be included in the curriculum.

uLearn has added new guidance materials to support your delivery of this revised curriculum. They can be found here.

Local Authorities tap into the power of history

We now have a record number of Local Authorities using the historic mapping feature, proving that maps are not just about geography! The list now includes Cornwall and Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire, East and West Sussex and Surrey to name a few.

The historic maps are a key way of comparing locations and how they have changed over the years. By combining these maps with the stitch or mirror tool, users can visually track the changes.

Resources, resources, resources!

uLearn has an amazing amount of resources that are available to all users, but now we can boast even more. Alongside the usual geography resources, Wikipedia articles and Answers information, there are now world-wide web cams and newspapers, all accessible via a single click!

Get the most out of uLearn with video tutorials

uLearn has been designed to be easy to use but we understand that with any new technology often comes a certain degree of confusion - especially if you are not used to using computers or the internet regularly.

That is why we have introduced a set of video guides that will take you through some of the important functions of uLearn. Click here to access the tutorials.

New Playlist features aid GIS lessons

GIS is such an important part of geography that we want to make it as easy as possible for you to integrate it into your lesson plans. With the all-new Playlists, we believe that we have done just that. All you have to do is get the map view just how you want it and then save the current view to a Playlist.

It now even saves all the relevant Topics you have ticked! With uLearn's Playlists, you can be sure your pupils are accessing the maps that are correct for the curriculum.
